Monestir de Sant Pere de Rodes El Port de la Selva

The Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes stands on one of the peaks of the Sierra de Rodes, a mountain range located to the north of the Alt Empordà, near the coast, above El Port de la Selva. It is one of the many examples of Catalan Romanesque architecture, but it is perhaps one of the most sophisticated from an architectural point of view.

From the 11th to the 14th century, it was the main spiritual center of the county of Empúries and its grandeur is reflected in the majestic dimensions of the monastic complex. This is made up of the church, the bell tower, the cloister, the sacristies, the rooms for daily life and the Palace of the Abbot.

The monastery is built in terraces to adapt to the terrain, and the different buildings are organized around the cloister and the church, which was built between the 10th and 11th centuries. In these two buildings you can admire an exceptional sample of Romanesque sculpture: the columns (some original from antiquity) and the capitals that crown them, witnesses of the strong classical influence of this unique church.

Outside, the doorway, made by the Master of Cabestany, exhibited various scenes from the life of Christ sculpted in white marble. Although only fragments of this work have been preserved, they give us an idea of its extraordinary artistic quality, probably one of the best of its time.

From the monastery, you can enjoy impressive views of Cabo de Creus. Before arriving, there are the remains of the medieval town of Santa Cruz de Rodas, among which the church of Santa Helena de Rodes stands out.

Sant Pere de Rodes is much more than a monastery : concert series, guided and dramatized tours, itineraries around the area... Will you miss it?

The educational activities will allow the little ones from participating in clue games to meeting a monk who lived in the Monastery.
