Travel to the Heart of the Romanesque of Empordà!

The force of the Tramuntana wind has shaped a landscape and a way of life. From the refined prose of Josep Pla to the surrealist universe of Salvador Dalí, passing through the brilliant mind of Narcís Monturiol, the Empordà is a land of genius.
But it's also a land of ancient stone, monasteries, churches, and vestiges that tell of centuries of history. We invite you to rediscover this unique region through its Romanesque heritage.
A route from south to north between hidden gems
It begins in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, where the Benedictine monastery and its iconic Porta Ferrada open the door to art and history. Facing the sea, this monumental complex gives its name to Catalonia's longest-running performing arts festival.
Continue to Santa Cristina de Aro, where religious Romanesque architecture blends with the magic of the Casa Mágica, a space dedicated to illusionism. Nearby, in Bisbal d'Empordà, you'll discover the civil Romanesque architecture of the castle and the fascinating Terracotta Museum, where ceramics come to life.
Before continuing, an essential stop: the Iberian site of Ullastret. In Palau-sator, continue the tour with the Romanesque paintings in the church of Sant Pau de Fontclara, a small treasure.
From the most austere Romanesque to the most sculptural
To the north, the route passes through Roses, an ancient Greek and Roman colony. In Ciutadella, you'll find the Monastery of Santa Maria and its imposing and elegant Lombard apse. Don't miss Vilabertran, where the Schubertíades are held every summer.
The Monastery of Santa Maria awaits you year-round with its serene beauty. Further afield, in Rabós, the Monastery of Sant Quirze de Colera rises amidst a landscape steeped in megalithic mysteries. And finally, the pinnacle of Romanesque architecture in the Empordà region: the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes.
Located high on the mountain, overlooking the sea, it is a place steeped in history, legend, and art. Take a close look at the capitals sculpted by the mysterious Master of Cabestany.
