Free guided tours of the Vila-seca Canal Mayor
The Acequia Mayor has been a protected natural area within the Plan for Areas of Natural Interest (PEIN) of the Generalitat of Catalonia since 1992. It is a coastal wetland of 17.3 hectares, located in Pineda Playa (Vila-seca), which constitutes the most important wetland of the Del Ebre.
Access to the Acequia Mayor is regulated and always through guided tours, available between August and February, coinciding with the months when birds are not nesting. The area is a true haven of biodiversity, with plant communities of reed beds, wet meadows, and rushes, and with animal species as unique as the terrapin (Aphanius iberus) and the European water turtle (Emys orbicularis), both endangered and very rare in other areas.
Visits are free and open to all ages. During the tour, the history of the site and its natural beauty are explained, traces of animal activity (footprints, feathers, nests, or food remains) are identified, and birds and other endangered species can be observed with binoculars.
Schedule:
- August and September: Saturdays and Sundays at 6 p.m.
- From October to February: Sundays at 11 a.m.
