Holy Week candies in Els Prats de Rei

For many years, the tradition of caramelles has been fundamental in the culture of the Catalan people. These caramelles are traditional melodies that resonate during the Easter celebration. Originally, the lyrics of these songs have a religious content, praising the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

However, over time, songs with more festive themes that allude to the beauty of nature have been added, coinciding with the arrival of spring. It is customary for groups of singers and dancers to gather in front of the balconies of the town's residents to offer their repertoire of popular songs and dances.

As a complement to the songs, the caramelles are usually accompanied by traditional Catalan dances, performed by the "esbart dansaire" of Els Prats de Rei. Furthermore, another traditional point of the caramelles of Els Prats de Rei is the launching of the crossbow, it is a utensil, formed by two series of parallel, articulated slats, which can be lengthened and shortened at will and which is used to encompass objects of a window or a high place. This is a tradition that has been lost in many towns in Catalonia, but that here we still keep very much alive.

The caramelles run through the entire town, but the highlight is the Easter mass, where all the people of the town gather with the caramellaires in the main square where all the songs are sung and all the dances are danced. To continue touring the rest of the town together.
