Sentmenat

Sentmenat is a municipality belonging to the Vallés Occidental region, in the province of Barcelona. Its municipal area is 28.80 km2 in area and is located in the southern foothills of Montmajor, bordering the municipalities of Castellar del Vallés, San Lorenzo Savall, Sabadell, Polinyà, Palau-solità and Plegamans and Caldes de Montbui. Its urban center is located at 213 meters above sea level.

The term enjoys a mild climate, protected by the mountains that limit it to the north. Outside its term, it borders with Sant Llorenç de Munt and Farell, and within the term, with the Sierra Cavallera, the Sierra del Calvario, the Sierra de Can Fruitós or de la Sagrera, the hill of the Torre Roja (where the a circular defense tower of early medieval origin and its Iberian settlement) and the Puig Rodó.

Bordering between Sentmenat and Castellar del Vallès we find the characteristic mountain of Puig de la Creu (664 m), where a hermitage of the same name is located from where you can discover an impressive view of the valleys, even of the city of Barcelona.

History

The origin of Sentmenat dates back to prehistoric and Roman periods, and it is suggested that the church of Sant Menna could have been built on top of an earlier Roman settlement. During the 14th-16th centuries, Sentmenat was consolidated as a population center, especially in Baix Square, and later other areas were developed such as Dalt Square and Climent Humet Street.

At the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, the Colomina area was urbanized, creating a new nucleus further north that was influenced by the new Town Hall and the Plaza de la Vila. This evolution resulted in a linear urban structure that extended from Plaça de Dalt to Carrer de Climent Humet.

Sentmenat is described as an agricultural town with a heritage predominantly made up of farmhouses and agricultural houses. There are also residential buildings from the late 19th century with influences of modernism and the New Cemetery. In addition, the town has important elements from an architectural and historical point of view, such as the church of Santa Menna, the hermitage of Sant Miquel del Arn, the hermitage of Can Fruitós and the Castellet de Guanta. Archaeological elements have also been discovered over time.
