DO Catalunya: an open, diverse designation present throughout the territory

The Catalonia Designation of Origin, approved in 1999, was created to reflect the winemaking tradition that has been so prevalent in Catalonia for over 2,000 years. The goal is to provide coverage to various wineries in some 200 Catalan municipalities that produce quality wines without a specific designation of origin.
The size and diversity of Catalonia offer a wide range of authorized grape varieties, allowing for great creativity when creating blends. This diversity encourages experimentation, both in the vineyard and in the winery. For this reason, the Catalonia Designation of Origin (DO) is considered an innovative Designation of Origin.
A Catalan wine with potential: a transversal DO that unites territory and varieties
This DO encompasses approximately 5,000 hectares of vineyards scattered throughout the region. The climate is generally Mediterranean, with plenty of sunshine and mild summers.
On these lands, the vines are cultivated in a traditional manner. Twenty-five grape varieties can be found, including white, Garnacha Blanca, Gewürztraminer, Macabeo, and Malvasia, and among the black grapes, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon, and Garnacha Negra.
Powerful red wines with intense aromas and very balanced flavors are produced. The white wines are generally light and very fruity. Rosés and traditional liqueurs, mistelas, rancios, and naturally sweet wines complete the offerings of this DO.
The DO Catalunya is defined by the desire to enhance quality and expand marketing options, with a designation that is synonymous with a job well done in major international markets.
