Descent of Falles de Taüll

They say that traditions only stay alive if they are celebrated year after year by the people of the area themselves, as something unique and not simply a legacy of the past. The Falles festival has been a deeply rooted tradition in the villages of the Boí Valley since ancient times.

Every year, previously with the beginning of the summer solstice, currently coinciding with the main festival, the towns of the valley run the Falles.

A festival related to the cult of the sun, giving thanks to the gods for the harvests received and scaring away evil spirits.

The festival begins a few days before with the preparation of the Falles, in which the boys and girls of the town work to prepare them and let them dry a little.

On the day of the Falles, everything begins at the lighthouse, a high mountain spot usually with a great view of the village, where a pine tree and other trees are planted for a bonfire. It's from this point that the Falles are lit before beginning the descent.

The Falleros, after dinner and when it is very dark, light the lighthouse, and with it their Falles, they make the descent proudly carrying the fire to the town with one of the boys in front, until they reach the square, where the people receive them with joy, music and celebration, a large bonfire is made with the remains of Falles that have resisted the descent and the celebration begins that can last all night.
