Festival of San Nicolás in Malgrat de Mar

Although Mar celebrates the Winter Festival on St. Nicholas Day, on December 6, in honor of one of the patrons of the new church of Vilanova de Palafolls (formerly Malgrat de Mar), founded in 1561. of the proximity to the sea and the importance of the seamanship in the village, San Nicolás, patron saint of the sailors, was chosen to accompany Saint Anthony Abbot, lawyer of the people and the animals, in the protection of the inhabitants of the dangers of the land and the sea.

This dedication to the saint originated the celebration of religious acts on this day, which would be expanded in various social events, such as markets, dances, etc., and have evolved into the current Festival. Currently, although religious significance is limited to the solemn office, as in much of the major festivals throughout the Catalan territory, Malgrat de Mar still retains the festival of San Nicolás as the central day of the Winter Festival.

During the party many activities for large and small are organized: film sessions, disco fair, tabalada, correfoc, young concert, market of San Nicolás, planted and parades of giants, verses (satirical poetry), children's theater show, concert and Major party dance.
