Exhibition "Retrats de vaixells" at the Maritime Museum of Barcelona
Graphic representations of ships have been made since ancient times, but rarely can the ship be identified, that is, know its name and its history. With this exhibition, the Barcelona Maritime Museum shows how ship portraits have evolved along with technological advances and social changes: adapting to the image representation tools of each moment, changing the reasons for making the portrait, of who makes the order, as well as the profiles of the authors and the way of disseminating them.
The exhibition begins with a brief introduction, showing some background to the 19th century. XVIII; From here, a chronological journey is made showing how the way of making these portraits and the techniques that have been used have changed. Since the 19th century, with the growth of large shipping companies and the beginning of a great demand and production of painted portraits of ships, until today with shippotters or ship observers, present in ports around the world, who also of images, they also share the technical information of the vessels.
