Oliana

Oliana is a Spanish municipality in the province of Lleida, located in the region of Alt Urgell, Catalonia. According to 2009 data, its population was 1,976 inhabitants.

Of Roman origin, it was part of the county of Urgell. The town originated around the castle of Oliana. During the war against Juan II of Castile it was defended by Guillermo Ramón del Brull.

The town suffered a plague epidemic in 1569 that decimated its population. During the Reapers' War, the town participated in the recovery of the castles of Opoul-Périllos and Salses in the Roussillon region. He minted his own coin in 1642.

In 1810, during the Spanish War of Independence, it was occupied by French troops. During the First Carlist War the town was fortified and its inhabitants abandoned it on two occasions.
