Alcarràs is one of the municipalities that make up the Segrià region. Located in the western end of the region, in contact with the Baix Cinca and borders on the terms of Saidí and Fraga, both of the Baix Cinca, and with the Segrianencs of Torres de Segre, Sudanell, Gimenells, the Pla de la Font and the capital Lleida, of which it is only 8 kilometers away.
According to the data of the Statistical Institute of Catalonia (Idescat), Alcarràs has a population of 9,026 inhabitants.
The term extends from the right of the Segre (limit SE of the territory), which continues through the plan segrianenc, to the sector of platforms sectioned into hills and plans that separate the conca of Segre and Cinca (Sierra del Coscollar, NS direction and 301 m of altitude), until the broad term of Vallmanya, speaker of this mountain range, already of the basin of the Cinca. In the northern sector, where are the Montagut terres, it rises up the Serra Grossa also up to 300 m. The Canals of Pinyana and Aragón and Catalonia irrigate the territory and, in lands near the Segre, the Remolinos canal. To ensure irrigation in times of drought, the term is full of rafts and marshes, among which include the dam Arrós and the rafts of Don Laureano, Teresa and Brisa.
The Villa de Alcarràs is characterized by an economy based mainly on agriculture and livestock, leading the list of municipalities with the most important agricultural census in Catalonia. However, in recent years it has also been surrounded by an extensive network of industrial estates, in which the agri-food industry and services meet.
The main communication route is the N-IIa road, which connects the town with Lleida and Fraga. The modern layout of the N-II (current A-2 motorway), built to avoid the passage of this through the urban center of Lleida, goes to the northern part of the town. A road communicates with the towns of Vallmanya, Gimenells and Almacelles. A road leads to Montagut, and a track from Vallmanya leads very close to Zaidín. The railway line from Barcelona to Madrid and the high-speed train between these two cities pass through the NE sector.
Its strategic location, link between the Iberian Peninsula and Europe, and its modern and powerful communications network, give it great possibilities to easily access the major European capitals and business centers.
The distances from Alcarràs to other cities are: in Lleida 8 km, in Barcelona 150 km, in Zaragoza 140 km, in Huesca 100 km, in Tarragona 100 km, in Madrid 450 km, in the French border 270 km, in Valencia 325 km.
