Exhibition "Sama-bajau, nomads of the sea" at Maritime Museum of Barcelona

The Sama-bajau are the only human ethnic group specifically adapted to the sea. They live in the Sulu Sea, between the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia, and only go to land to trade, build boats or bury their dead. Millennia ago, their ancestors specialized in the exploitation of marine resources.

The Barcelona Maritime Museum has several objects from the Philippines in its collections. Among these objects, two complete boats stand out, made in the 19th century and arriving in Barcelona in 1899, which take us back to the origins of navigation and shipbuilding. Through these pieces and photographs, the MMB dedicates this monographic exhibition to the Sama-bajau, a unique culture for its adaptation to marine life.

The Sama-bajau exhibition. Nomads of the Sea can be visited until May 12 at the MMB Mirador space, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free.
