Vilanova International Festival of Popular and Traditional Music

In 1981, at a time when traditional and root music was gaining ground, and due to the interest in this music among citizens, the committee for research and promotion of popular culture, organizer of the Fiesta Mayor, decided to organize a series of concerts within the framework of the Festa, from which the FIMPT in Vilanova i la Geltrú emerged.

A few years later, this initiative became separate from the Fiesta Mayor, took on its own character, and became one of the most important cultural activities of the Vilanovense summer.

The FIMPT (International Festival of Popular and Traditional Music) was born as a pioneering initiative ahead of its time. It breaks boundaries by restoring and normalizing traditional popular music in Catalonia and is key to its dissemination, offering and promoting music, sounds, instruments, and cultures from around the world. The festival has become a benchmark in our country and also in the festival world throughout Europe.

FIMPT is the oldest international festival of traditional popular music, world music, or folk music in Catalonia and throughout Spain; and one of the oldest in Europe. FIMPT has played a pivotal role in connecting our traditional music with that of its surroundings, raising awareness of the wealth of traditional music from around the world, which was then completely unknown, and creating an ever-growing and loyal audience for this type of roots music.

The 1980s and 1990s were undoubtedly the festival's most thriving years, adapting to every moment, and it remains alive today.
