Democratic Memory Days: "85 years of the Battle of the Ebro"
"As of April 19, 1938, the Ebro river became the war front line between the two opposing sides. The Popular Army of the Republic remained on the left bank, while the right bank was occupied by the Francoist Army The Ebro Autonomous Group, later the Ebro Army, immediately decided to fortify its front line by building lines of trenches parallel to the river. In the following months, both sides lashed out with rifle and artillery fire.On July 25, the 10th Mixed Brigade of the 46th Republican Division crossed the Ebro at the mouth of the Canaletes River, in Benifallet. It locates the trench, dominates the access to the Canaletes River, becoming a key position to reach the mouth of the river."
The passage of the Ebro through Benifallet is collected by the company Terra Enllà in the location of the memory spaces they created for the El Baix Ebre Regional Council and has as its source the publication by José Manuel Martínez Bande, La Batalla del Ebro: "Subsector The X Brigade of the 46th Division crosses the Ebro in the first echelon, extending immediately to the right and left, crossing the Canaletas river and enveloping the enemy positions of the Portell vertex and Los Mollets, which it occupies after overcoming their resistance. has established contact with the 11th Division, beginning the passage of the 37th and 101st Brigades, also from the 46th Division".
The Benifallet Town Hall and the Stolpersteine memory group want to give continuity to the Historical Memory Days that began last year with the tribute to the four deportees from Benifallet in the Nazi camps and continue with a second day that this year will focus on the Battle of the Ebro, considering that the 85th anniversary of its beginning will be celebrated. The project again includes collecting information and further documenting this pass at Canaletes and disseminating it.
The object is to remember this fact and work on its search and dissemination, as well as to remember the fundamental role of the river as a means of communication and at the same time as an element that has been decisive in life in the Lands of the Ebro.
