'Lo mite emmascarat' - Ashley Suszczynski's look at rural masquerades in Europe!
Location: Salt Museum - Gerri de la Sal. | Dates: August 9–September 30.
Figures wearing masks, animal skins, horns, or straw dresses pass through villages and mountains in celebrations that seem suspended in time.
American photographer Ashley Suszczynski has specialized in capturing masquerade rituals around the world. The project began in 2019 when, driven by a fascination with ritual expressions that resist global uniformity, she embarked on a journey through rural communities in Europe with her camera.
Since then, he has explored dozens of countries, capturing the symbolic and aesthetic power of these figures, who, despite their age, continue to speak to the contemporary imagination. His work has been published in prestigious media such as National Geographic, All About Photo, and Photo District News, and has received numerous international awards and recognition.
Her exhibition Ancient Tradition in the Modern Day opened the 3rd Barcelona Photography Biennial and the 7th Barcelona Biennial of Fine Arts and Documentary Photography. With over 325,000 followers on Instagram (@maskedtraditions), Suszczynski has created an international community fascinated by the mystery, beauty, and cultural resilience of these manifestations.
'The Masked Mite' presents a carefully curated selection of images from European masquerades: an exceptional catalogue of ancestral figures parading in festive, liturgical, or agricultural contexts, evoking order and chaos, nature, fertility, and fear.
