Fontanilles is part of the Baix Empordà region, province of Girona. The municipal term has an extension of 9 km2 and the town is 29 m. of altitude.
The limits of the municipal area are Gualta and Torroella de Montgrí to the north, Pals to the east, Palau-sator and Pals to the south and Ullastret to the west. It has added the nucleus of Llabià.
