Via Crucis of Castelló d'Empúries

On Palm Sunday and Good Friday the Living Via Crucis ofCastelló d'Empúries is celebrated!

With more than two decades, the via crucis, or way of the cross, already marks an uninterrupted tradition where a hundred people, all of them amateurs, give life to this peculiar representation of the last moments of Jesus in life, his death and his resurrection.

The unpublished texts, given by the family of the priest murdered in Chile, during the 1973 coup d'état, and son of Castellón, Mossèn Joan Alsina, mark step by step the 14 stations, very well defined between the crowd and the scene, being able In many of them we breathe what the Son of God experienced on his Calvary.

The intricate physiognomy of the town, and the setting in the final scene, in a detailed crucifixion, with a silenced audience, attests to what he is feeling. It is a harsh representation, cruel at certain moments, and that leaves no one indifferent, culminating in an apotheotic closing in the heart of the beloved Empordà cathedral. The dates of representation are invariable; Palm Sunday, representation of the entry of Jesus Christ on a donkey in the Basilica Square, at noon. And on Good Friday, the representation of the Via Crucis from the patio of the Palacio de los Condes passing through different streets and squares to the Basilica.
