Bacchus the masks of the god exhibition at the VINSEUM
Bacchus is the god of wine, theater, and fertility. Equivalent to the Greek Dionysus, it also collects very old traditions and brings together other divinities, such as the Italic Liber Pater. Capable of commanding fury, passion and frenzy, it represents the most irrational aspects of the human being as opposed to the sense of order and measure embodied by Apollo.
The exhibition of the VINSEUM, the Museum of Wine Cultures of Catalonia, reveals the origins of the god -the last one who joined the Olympics-, his exploits, the composition of his entourage, his role in the origin of the theater, the elements that symbolize it and its marked character of domestic divinity.
The sample includes around fifty objects from Catalan museums, which testify to the roots of this divinity in the society of Roman times and which allow to discover all the masks of this multifaceted and complex god.
