Viladamat

The municipality of Viladamat is a small town located on the alluvial plain on the right of the Fluvià, near the coast. The territory is rugged rapporteur for the low elevation hills that form the Sierra de Ventalló. This small mountain range separates the valleys of the Fluvià and the Ter.

The highest point of this mountain range is Puig Segalar (179 m above sea level) from where you can see a magnificent view of the Empordà plain and especially the Gulf of Roses.

The situation in the plain near Empúries, the Roman remains existing in the municipality (Roman Villa of the Tolegassos, Roman silo, Roman furnace) and the type of urban structure, with rectilinear streets that form right angles, have made suppose that Viladamat can have a Roman origin.

This urban arrangement can also be motivated by the fact that the population is at an old crossroads, that of Empúries in Besalú, that of Vírgenes in Figueres and what for Albons goes to Torroella de Montgrí.

Neighborhoods

Palauborrell

The neighborhood of Palauborrell, in the western sector of the area and 2.5 km from its head, is formed by five farmhouses and the church, located on the eastern slope of the Sierra de Ventalló, in a small valley between the Puig Viader and the Puig Rodó.

Sant Feliu de la Garriga

The neighborhood of Sant Feliu de la Garriga, 2.5 km south west of Viladamat, is on a landing on the slope of Puig Segalar, from where the lower course of the Ter and the Fluvià and the entire coast of the Gulf of Roses can be seen.

The castle of Sant Feliu de la Garriga is on the north side of the church, it is a large building of the seventeenth century, in the central courtyard are preserved some vestiges that could correspond to the medieval work.
