Montornès de Segarra

Montornès de Segarra has been a municipality in the Segarra region since 1989, and is located on the border with Urgell, to which it belonged since the incorporation of the territorial division in 1936.

The main population centers of this municipality are the town of Montornès de Segarra, head of the municipality, and that of Masía de Bondia. de Montornès, which drains to the left from the term of Montoliu de Segarra. It is dominated by the remains of the castle (some of its walls date from the 12th and 13th centuries) and the parish church, attached to the old castle, is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, probably built taking advantage of some of the castle's rooms, with added elements of Renaissance style. It preserves some typical and pleasant corners, with old houses with voussoir portals. Montornès castle was built at the time of the conquest of the area on Iberian and Roman settlement strata on a site that strategically dominated the surrounding lands. The original church of the castle, which has completely disappeared, must have been located next to the old cemetery. Agriculture and livestock are the only economic activities in the municipality: cereals, oil, wine and almonds in the dry land (irrigation is limited to 2 ha, irrigated with water from wells), sheep and farm animals. The forest area (holm oaks and oaks) occupies 300 ha.
