Exhibition "Destination: La Jonquera. Transformative Migrations"

The Exile Memorial Museum (MUME) presents the temporary exhibition "Destination: La Jonquera. Transformative Migrations," a display that recovers and highlights the collective memory of the migrations that have shaped the municipality over the last 80 years. The exhibition will be on display from July 19, 2025, to January 11, 2026.

A project built with the community

The exhibition is the result of a collaboration with various social groups in La Jonquera and students from the INS La Jonquera school, who have contributed testimonies, materials, and their own reflections. This joint effort lends authenticity and a personal touch to an exhibition that puts people and their experiences at its heart.

Two waves of migration that have transformed the municipality

The exhibition's narrative revolves around two major migratory flows. On the one hand, the arrival, between the 1950s and 1970s, of families from the south of the state, especially from the Malaga municipality of Arriate.

On the other hand, there was the international migration that occurred between the late 1980s and 2000, with people coming from Morocco, Romania, Central America, and other countries. These two distinct periods, together, have shaped the current cultural diversity of La Jonquera.

Testimonies, photographs and living memory

Through real testimonies, audiovisual resources and historical documents, the exhibition explores the factors surrounding each migration process:

  • The socioeconomic context of origin.
  • The reasons behind the move.
  • The conditions of the trip.
  • The welcome and adaptation to the municipality.
  • The cultural and identity imprint that endures over time.

Photographers such as Josep Ribas, Robin Townsend, Teo Corominas, José Maria Montal, Jordi Casals (Meli), and the CRDI archives contribute a powerful visual narrative. The curatorial work of historian Lluís Serrano and the design by Pep Canaleta and Jordi Claveria complete this rigorous and moving exhibition.

An extension of the exhibition on Calle Mayor

Thanks to the sponsorship of the Tramuntana Group, the exhibition is expanded with an open-air photographic display along Major Street, with portraits taken by Elisenda Raurich that give voice and face to the people of Junqueras today.

An essential visit to understand the identity of La Jonquera

The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to reflect on memory, identity, and coexistence in a town historically marked by passage, change, and welcoming. A cultural offering that moves, challenges, and enriches. Don't miss it!
