Monthly guided tour to the Canta Mine - Negrín Mine

A visit to the Mina Canta de La Vajol site for private individuals will be scheduled for the third Saturday of each month.

The Mina Canta de la Vajol building has recently undergone restoration and restoration due to its role during the Spanish Civil War in the evacuation of the Republic's economic and artistic heritage. Its opening to the public is a further, but crucial, step in its recognition as a space of remembrance, a process that began decades ago.

In 1937, the Canta de la Vajol mine was seized, and a fortified building was constructed to serve as a refuge and storage facility. Initially, funds from the Ministry of Finance and the Reparations Fund were used, and later, funds from the Central Board of Artistic Treasures were also stored there, using depots in Figueres, Perelada, and La Vajo. For months, a group of workers from Cartagena carried out the adaptation and construction work at the Canta mine under the direction of architect and Lieutenant Juan Negrín Mijailov of the People's Army of the Republic, son of the Prime Minister, Juan Negrín López. The main function of the fortified building was to provide access for the temporary storage of these economic assets—gold, jewelry, and works of art—via freight elevators to the vault that was set up inside the mine.
