DO Montsant: Wine tourism, landscape and wine in Priorat

With most of its territory within the Priorat region, except for some lands in the Ribera d'Ebre, the DO Montsant is defined as a new, modern and active Designation of Origin.
The climate is Mediterranean with continental characteristics. Rainfall is scarce and there are marked temperature fluctuations, although the south is warmer.
The Montsant DO encompasses everything from large cooperatives to family-run initiatives, as well as private wineries of varying sizes and producers who make wines from their own vineyards using the facilities of other wineries. They all share a common goal: to produce quality wines that reflect the land.
Characteristics of DO Montsant wines
The vineyards of the Montsant DO are planted between 50 meters above sea level in the lower areas and 700 meters above sea level in the higher areas. The vines have a low yield, a characteristic that defines the wines from this region and makes them highly prized.
Among the grape varieties authorized by the Montsant DO, four stand out as historical and predominant. In the case of the white varieties, these are Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo, and in the case of the red varieties, Garnacha Tinta and Cariñena, which represent more than 65% of the Montsant vineyards. These historical and native varieties are the ones best adapted to the territory and are what make the Montsant DO unique within the global winemaking landscape.
In addition to these historic varieties, in the DO Montsant we can find wines made with Chardonnay, Moscatel, Pansal, Parellada, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha peluda, Merlot, Monastrell, Picapoll tinto, Syrah and Tempranillo.
