DO Empordà: wines with character between sea and mountains

The Empordà, geographically located in the northeastern corner of Catalonia, presents a landscape of contrasts, with the natural boundaries in the north of the mountainous area of the Pyrenees, and to the east, the Mediterranean Sea, with the spectacular Costa Brava, making the Empordà a unique place, uniting sea and mountains, where the vines grow less than a foot from the ground to avoid being blown away by the Tramuntana wind.

A designation with winemaking history, unique landscapes and Mediterranean varieties

The climate is Mediterranean, influenced by humid winds from the south and cold winds from the north. The soils are poor and acidic, with good drainage, and ideal for the production of quality wines.

There is no doubt that the wine culture and knowledge of the wine trade reached Catalonia around the 6th century BC thanks to the most important Greek colony in the country, Empúries, a city that, centuries later, would give its name to the entire Empordà region.

The range of Empordà wines is very broad. The red wines are of high quality, full-bodied, well-constructed, and harmonious. Fresh and flavorful white wines are produced, often with native grape varieties, as well as other single-varietal wines of notable quality. Rosés are also available, characterized by a well-defined cherry color, with great personality and a delicate aroma, fresh and with a moderate alcohol content.

A unique feature of the region is Garnacha del Empordà, a naturally sweet wine made from the grape variety that gives it its name. Generous, with the flavor of the same ripe grape, warm and silky, qualities that give it the characteristics of an exceptional dessert wine, along with the other sweet wine typical of the region, Moscatel del Empordà.
