Indians Fair in Calafell

The 'indians', also popularly known as indianos or americanos, is how adventurers and merchants were known in Catalonia who, after emigrating to the Spanish colonies in America and making their fortunes ("to make the Americas"), returned to the metropolis.

Their clothing was very elegant and gave them a stately air that distinguished them from the rest of the population. It was typical American clothing: light pants, a vest, a large silk scarf around his neck, and a jipi (a Panama hat).

Some, upon their return, built large mansions (casas de indianos) that today are an excellent example of the best architecture of the second half of the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century. They were often generous with their people and, thanks to their patronage and willingness, they became promoters of actions and works such as lighting, the railway or schools.

Calafell has some buildings from the Indian period, such as Cal Perico and Cal Bolavà.

During the weekend there will also be workshops and demonstrations of trades, tatanets, children's workshops, an exhibition of bobbin lace and much more!
