4-Day Tour of the Rhune Train and the French Basque Country
Come on October 28th for a 4-day trip to discover the Rhune Train and the French Basque Country!
Day 1 - PLACE OF ORIGIN - PAMPLONA - IRUN
Departure from our home base for the Basque Country. Lunch at a restaurant along the route. Stop in Pamplona, where we'll take a walk through the city center to see the main attractions. Free time. Continue the trip to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 2 - BIARRITZ - BAYONNE - HONDARRIBIA
Breakfast and departure for a visit to Biarritz, originally a whaling town. In the 19th century, doctors recommended sea bathing in Biarritz for its therapeutic properties. It rose to fame in 1854 when Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, had a palace built on the beach, where the British royal family spent long periods. Highlights include the Marine Museum, with 24 aquariums featuring sharks and whales; the Imperial Chapel; and two large casinos, Barres and Bellevue, facing the Grand Plage.
We will continue our visit to Bayonne, at the confluence of the Nive and Adour rivers, founded in 950 on the ruins of an ancient Roman castrum. Highlights include: Sainte-Marie Cathedral, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 and a monument on the Way of St. James; the Citadel and Vauban's fortifications. Return to the hotel. Lunch.
In the afternoon, we'll depart for Hondarribia, at the foot of Mount Jaizkibel, the natural border with France. Thick, high walls surround the city, enclosing the old quarter, with its grid layout characteristic of the Middle Ages. Highlights include Charles V Castle, the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Pomera, the Etxebeste House, Guipúzcoa Square, and numerous medieval streets. Return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 3 - SMALL TRAIN DE LA RHUNE - SAINT JEAN DE LUZ - SAN SEBASTIA
Breakfast. In the morning, we'll head to the town of Ascain, in the Basque-French Pyrenees, to take the "Petit train de la Rhune" (Small Train of the Rhune), a magnificent and spectacular hike to the peak of the same name. We'll then visit Saint Jean de Luz, a beautiful town on the French Basque coast with its lively and picturesque port.
In the surrounding area are noble buildings such as the Maison Louis XIV, which connects with the pedestrian network of the city center and the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Lunch. In the afternoon, we will visit San Sebastián, a beautiful city on the Cantabrian Sea, home to its famous La Concha beach, the port, and the old town with the Church of San Vicente. Free time. Return to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 4 - VITORIA - PLACE OF ORIGIN
Breakfast and departure for Vitoria-Gazteiz, the capital of the Basque Country and the beautiful Green Capital of Europe, where we will take a walking tour. Highlights of Vitoria include the Cathedral of Santa María and the Medieval Quarter, as well as the many monuments and urban sculptures scattered throughout the city's streets and squares, such as the Ken Follet monument, Casto Solano's The Minotaur, and Juan José Eguizábal's The Wanderer.
