DO Costers del Segre: wines with personality among vineyards and western landscapes

The Costers del Segre Designation of Origin is a mosaic of territories spread throughout the Segre River basin and the Lleida Pyrenees, with the aim of uniting and giving its own identity to the wine industry in the province of Lleida.
The territory of Costers del Segre covers land in the regions of Pallars Jussà, Pallars Sobirà, Segrià, Urgell, Pla d'Urgell, Las Garrigues, La Noguera and La Segarra. Seven subzones are distinguished: Raimat, Segrià, Pallars, Garrigues, Río Cuervo Valley, Artesa de Segre and Urgell. Each subzone presents climatic and soil differences, and landscapes that combine mountains and plains.
A denomination with character and great geographical diversity
The DO has its own distinct characteristics that distinguish it from others, such as its limestone soils and a distinct Mediterranean climate, which exhibits strong seasonal and daily temperature fluctuations, making it ideal for grape cultivation.
The predominant white grape varieties are the traditional ones: Macabeo and Parellada. This gives the whites of the Costers del Segre region a more classic profile, meaning light, fruity, and acidic. Among the red grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Pinot Noir predominate, but traditional varieties are also grown, especially Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Trepat.
The inland character of the area, far from the sea, has meant that for centuries it has been isolated from commercial routes, resulting in wines with their own distinctive features.
