World Film Day
Every second Saturday in February, World Film Day is celebrated, a day dedicated to honoring the seventh art as a source of inspiration, emotion, and human connection. Cinema is not only a form of entertainment, but also a gateway to imaginary worlds, alternative realities, and stories that often make us reflect on ourselves and society.
In Catalonia, cinema has a rich and diverse history. From the beginning of the 20th century, with pioneering figures such as Fructuós Gelabert, to the international recognition of contemporary authors such as Isabel Coixet, Carla Simón and Albert Serra, Catalan cinema has been able to build its own voice in the global audiovisual landscape. Productions such as Pa negre and Alcarràs, winner of the Golden Bear at the 2022 Berlinale, have highlighted our language, culture and landscape.
Also worth highlighting is the fundamental role of the Filmoteca de Catalunya, which preserves and disseminates the country's film heritage, and the Gaudí Awards, which annually recognize the best Catalan productions. These institutions are key to keeping the cinematic spirit alive.
World Film Day is, therefore, an opportunity to celebrate the magic of stories projected on screen, and also to value the creativity and talent of an industry that, in Catalonia, continues to evolve and excite.
