Xavier Tomasa: running to live, living to run

Xavier Tomasa: running to live, living to run

Born in Berguedà and an athlete by vocation, Xavier Tomasa is one of the most outstanding runners in Catalonia. His story with the sport began in childhood, on the school tracks of Berga, thanks to his father, who encouraged him to take his first steps in this world. After a break in high school, he returned stronger than ever and, since then, hasn't stopped racking up kilometers, challenges, and successes.

We talked to him about mountains, memories, his homeland, and the passion that drives him to run beyond the clock.

A Catalonia that is traversed at a steady pace

What is your favorite spot in Catalonia?

Los Rasos de Peguera. It's the mountain where I can spend many hours running without encountering anyone, disconnecting from the world and enjoying nature. It's a place that brings me calm and freedom.

Rasos de Peguera

Los Rasos de Peguera, located in the Berguedà region, is one of the most beloved spots for mountain lovers. Forests, trails, and spectacular views make this place a perfect refuge for those seeking silence and fresh air.

Is there any place in Catalonia that brings back childhood memories?

Torredembarra beach. It's where I took my first steps and where I've spent every summer of my life. Now, my son also spends his summers there, which makes it a very special place for me.

It's an ideal beach for families, with beautiful sunsets that I recommend everyone see at least once.

What Catalan experience or tradition do you think everyone should experience at least once?

La Patum, without a doubt. It's the local festival and should be experienced at least once in a lifetime. As an experience, I also recommend having a calçotada with friends; there's nothing that brings people together better.

If you had to recommend just one thing to someone visiting Catalonia for the first time, what would it be?

Visit small towns, those where you can still find good home-cooked food and authentic people. That's where you truly discover the essence of the country.

What corner of Catalonia have you yet to discover?

The Girona region. It's a province that really appeals to me, but I haven't had the chance to go yet. I'm eager to explore it further, especially its routes and landscapes.

Which is harder: a marathon, a triathlon, or an Ironman?

I've done 15 marathons, about 10 triathlons, and a half Ironman, and I couldn't tell you which one was the hardest because I enjoyed them all so much. However, I understand that, due to its distance, an Ironman is the most demanding challenge of all.

Xavier Tomasa

Ironman is one of the toughest sporting events in the world: a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km bike ride, and a 42.2 km run. A true test of physical and mental endurance.
