Prepare your trip

Prepare your trip

Traveling is an enriching experience that allows us to discover new cultures, enjoy beautiful landscapes and meet people from all over the world. However, in a world increasingly aware of the importance of sustainability, it is crucial to adopt responsible practices when planning our trips. Here are some guidelines to help you organize your next adventure in an ethical and sustainable way, with a positive impact on your destination and the planet.

1- Choose sustainable destinations

Before embarking on your trip, research destinations that promote sustainability and respect for the environment. Look for sites committed to ecological practices, that ensure the conservation of biodiversity and work for community development. Many times, lesser-known destinations offer more authentic experiences and have less impact on the environment.

2- Research and plan

This will not only help you travel more responsibly but will make you travel calmly and enjoy the experience much more: before packing your suitcase, research your destination! Knowing the local culture, customs and environmental problems of the region will allow you to make the best decisions for your trip. Choose in advance all the places you want to visit and the experiences you want to include in the trip, so that you can organize the days and have time for everything. Plan and you won't have to look for a place to eat at the last minute or take less sustainable transportation due to lack of time!

3- Travel on the best dates

If you are lucky enough to be able to choose when to go on vacation, keep the dates in mind when planning your trip. Visiting a territory outside of the high season helps to deseasonalize and keep the area active throughout the year, avoiding an overload of tourist destinations. This initiative will allow you to enjoy the sites much more and avoid crowds, and you will also notice it in your pocket, since traveling in the low season is much more affordable.

4- Choose the most sustainable transport

Transportation is one of the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions, so harmful to the health of the planet. To minimize our carbon footprint we can do our part by using public transport such as trains or buses, and avoiding airplanes whenever possible. If we use our own vehicle, it is worth considering electric cars, with which we can enjoy the best routes without having to worry about autonomy! If possible, consider walking or renting a bike to explore your destination: you will discover the area in peace and the planet will thank you!

5- Stay in sustainable establishments

When looking for vacation accommodation, prioritize properties that follow sustainable practices, such as efficient water management, use of renewable energy, waste minimization and recycling, and participation in local and conservation initiatives. Increasingly, everywhere there are hotels, rural houses and campsites that prioritize environmental sustainability and contribute to the well-being of local communities. Here you have a ton of environmentally responsible accommodation options that you will love!

6- Respect and Value Local Culture

Before you travel, familiarize yourself with local customs and regulations. Respect traditional clothing, avoid behavior that could be offensive, and learn some basic phrases of the local language. Participating in cultural activities in a respectful manner contributes to the preservation of the cultural identity of the community, and will make you enjoy the destination as a local.

7- Eat Responsibly

Enjoying local cuisine is an important part of traveling, but it is also an opportunity to make responsible decisions. Opt for restaurants that serve local and seasonal foods, avoiding establishments that offer endangered species. If you cook in the establishment where you stay, buy takeaway food or want to enjoy a picnic in nature, remember to recycle or reuse the packaging!

8- Reduce Waste

Minimize your waste production by carrying a reusable bag to avoid disposable plastic bags. It will be essential for you to carry a refillable water bottle, to always have water on hand and avoid buying plastic bottles. When you buy food or hygiene products, make sure the packaging is made with recycled materials, and close the circle by recycling them after use.

9- Contribute to the Local Community

To keep tourist destinations active, it is necessary to contribute to the local economy and ensure that the community is committed to tourism. As tourists we can help by shopping at local markets and small businesses to help the local economy grow. If you have the opportunity, participate in activities and experiences that directly benefit local residents and collaborate with conservation and sustainable development organizations. Not only will you learn about the culture of the place you visit but you will make a great contribution to local sustainability.

With careful planning and conscious decisions, your trip will be a memorable adventure as well as a positive contribution to the world. Traveling responsibly is a commitment to the future of our planet and to the conservation of the wonders we explore. Have a good trip!
