September 16, International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
Every September 16th, the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated, a day established by the United Nations to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting this fragile layer that surrounds the Earth and filters the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. This event commemorates the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987, a pioneering international agreement that led to the progressive reduction in the use of substances that negatively affect the ozone layer, such as CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons).
Despite the progress made, the fight to preserve the environment remains urgent. One way we can contribute to this goal is by reducing our carbon footprint, especially when we travel. In Catalonia, a region rich in landscapes, culture, and biodiversity, sustainable tourism is becoming a key tool for protecting both the ozone layer and the planet in general.
As responsible tourists, we can adopt practices such as using public transportation or cycling to get around, choosing accommodations with environmental certifications, consuming local and seasonal products, and avoiding single-use plastics. Furthermore, participating in ecotourism activities and respecting natural spaces directly contribute to minimizing the environmental impact of our stay.
Preserving the ozone layer and fighting climate change are two sides of the same coin. On this International Day, let's reflect on how we travel and consume. Through small actions, even in our leisure time, we can join forces to protect the planet for future generations. Catalonia offers a thousand and one experiences to enjoy the region consciously and responsibly.
