Guided tour of the Séquia Major de Vila-seca
In the destination Vila-seca, la Pineda Platja we have the Séquia Major, a natural space protected by the Pla d'Espais d'Interès Natural (PEIN) of the Generalitat de Catalunya, since 1992. This area of 17.3 hectares is the most interesting wetland between the Llobregat Delta and the Ebro Delta.
The Séquia Major arises from the sandy sediments provided by the river Francolí, forming part of its delta. The lagoons in the area were fed by natural freshwater springs and, in turn, by seawater seepage and flooding. This alternation of water types results in a remarkable diversity of environments and biodiversity, including endangered species such as the “fartet” fish and the European water turtle.
Originally, these lands were used for agriculture due to the richness of the soil, but because of the continuous flooding, they were difficult to cultivate. In 1537 the Séquia Major was built to drain the land, as well as hydrological regulation systems, such as the Caseta de les Xibeques, making it possible to continue with this activity until the beginning of the 20th century.
Now that the agricultural activity has been abandoned, the area has regained its natural aspect of wet meadows, reed beds and lagoons, which give it a unique charm that makes it worth a visit. Here the history and natural value of the area is explained in detail as you walk along the footbridges that facilitate access, and you can also observe birds and other protected species using binoculars.
Guided tours are free and suitable for all ages. The opening times are:
- August and September: Saturdays and Sundays at 18:00 h.
- From October to February: Sundays at 11:00 h.
To visit the Séquia Major you should book in advance on tel. 977 39 03 62 of the Patronat Municipal de Turisme de Vila-seca. For school groups there is a specific environmental education programme.
