DO Tarragona: Mediterranean wines with history and living tradition

The Roman Empire was the true driving force behind wine production in the Tarragona region. The Tarragona region was renowned for its wines and was considered the most privileged in the empire. Tarragona has always been a strong wine exporter, so much so that a large number of wineries were concentrated on Calle Real de Tarragona, next to the port, exporting their wines across Europe by boat.

A denomination rooted in the territory with sweet, white and red wines with character

Already in the 19th century, wines from this area were highly regarded. In fact, Tarragona Clásico wine was highly prized among the English aristocracy. In 1932, wines produced in this area were granted protected status, and in 1976, a regulatory council and designation of origin were established.

The Tarragona Designation of Origin encompasses 73 municipalities in two areas of the province: Camp de Tarragona, which includes the regions of Alt Camp, Baix Camp, and Tarragonès, and Ribera d'Ebre.

The climate of the Tarragona DO and the direct influence of the sea, with its gentle topography and exceptional terrain, offer smooth, fresh, and typically Mediterranean wines. The climate is temperate, Mediterranean-type, without extreme temperature fluctuations. Rainfall is very irregular, with precipitation concentrated in early autumn.

It is characterized by the diversity of wines, with whites predominating over blacks and rosés.

The white wines have a moderate alcohol content, fruity aromas, and a pronounced, pleasant body. The rosés are fine, fresh, and elegant. The red wines are full-bodied, light, warm, and fleshy.
