Festive and informative day Les Cases: women and the sea

The Alcanar Town Hall has organized, for yet another year, 'Les Cases: dones i mar', a festive and informative day that honors all the women in history who have supported the seafaring families of Les Cases de Alcanar for years.

Traditionally, women of the sea have brought the baton from home. After stretching the punt, fishing or walking to sell fish, most of them mended for their families, but some also mended for other sailors' boats, earning very little remuneration.

They used to mend the fishing nets in groups, sitting on the rattan chairs of the time, while they talked and prepared food for adults and children. With the evolution of the trade of the sailor, the gear used has been changing and customs linked to families of fishermen and menders have been lost, while some professions have also become more technical and women, finally, have been able to have access.
