Santa Bàrbara
Despite the testimony of prehistoric remains, the formation of Santa Bárbara is linked to the colonization of the uncultivated lands of the term of Tortosa, which after the first decades of the 18th century were made by families mainly from this city.
These first inhabitants transformed the vacant land of the Planes de la Galera (as it was then known) into fields of olive trees, naming those lands as the Planes de Santa Bárbara (hence the name of plains and plains), once it was built a chapel in his honor. The economic perspectives caused an increase in population at the end of the 18th century, initiating the struggle towards the independence of the town, which was finally achieved on May 9, 1828, the day of San Gregorio, patron saint of Santa Bárbara.
Since then Santa Bárbara has not stopped growing. With just under 4,000 inhabitants, it has established itself as an active and attractive municipality, a benchmark in the interior plain of the Montsià region that looks to the future without forgetting its roots.
