Bellcaire d'Empordà is a municipality in the comarca of Baix Empordà located near the neighboring county of Alt Empordà. Its geographical location is characterized, like most villages in the plain of the Empordà, being located in a small top.
In this summit we found the old palace-castle of the Counts of Empurias which dates from the thirteenth century and served as a shield and defense in medieval times. Then, the counts of Empurias dominated the surrounding lands: Torroella de Montgri and L'Escala. This castle was declared a national historical monument l for Generalitat de Catalunya.
In the northern part of the population had a pond that was drained in the mid-eighteenth century, so that it can leverage as farmland. It was already a clear sign as would be the future of the population: agriculture.
This, the improvements in this field and the arrival of Occitan from France because of religious persecution took a considerable increase in the population has been growing positively. Although Bellcaire d'Empordà has never stopped being a charming little village at a time.
It is for this reason that in this small town we can find the church of Sant Joan de Bellcaire characterized by the diversity of ages and styles in which it was built: Early Christian, Romanesque, Gothic and Romanesque.
Furthermore, we can not forget one of the most characteristic elements of the population: Moli Rec. Currently, this hydraulic pathway serves to supply the farmers of the area in their farmland, but once used basically to move the mills in the area and, specifically, Bellcaire.
