L'Argentera

Province: Tarragona | Shire: Baix Camp | Inhabitants: 129 | Extension: 10,1 Km2 | Altitude: 344 m

Situated beneath the Escornalbou mountain, L'Argentera stands out for its privileged position in the middle of the Pradell-L'Argentera mountain range. With an area of 10.12 km² and at an altitude of 344 metres, the municipality includes the village of L'Argentera, the isolated centre of La Sort and the Trilla farmhouse. Surrounded by municipalities such as Duesaigües, Riudecanyes, Villanueva de Escornalbou, Colldejou, La Torre de Fontaubella and Pradell de la Teixeta, the municipal area is characterised by a rugged, dry terrain, where scrubland and pine and oak forests predominate. Although agricultural activity was of some importance in the past, today cultivation is scarce, with some hazelnut trees and small areas of orchards.

L'Argentera has maintained its rural character and has become an ideal starting point for excursions in the surrounding mountains. Its location makes it a quiet destination, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, where visitors can enjoy nature and the peace of its surroundings. In addition, its good rail connection makes it easy to access without the need for a private vehicle, making it an ideal destination for a short break.

The town centre retains the charm of the past with narrow streets and stone houses that reflect its history. Walking through its streets you can perceive the calm of a small town that has managed to preserve its roots, maintaining traditional buildings and the authentic character of rural life. L'Argentera is known for its tranquility and authenticity, offering a unique experience to visitors looking for relaxation and nature.

Places of Interest

Monastery Castle d'Escornalbou

Just a few kilometres from L'Argentera, the Escornalbou Castle Monastery is one of the most emblematic places in the area. Built in the 12th century on the site of an old Muslim fortress, this architectural complex combines Romanesque and Gothic elements. Its initial function was that of an Augustinian monastery, but over the centuries it acquired new functions and architectural modifications. From the castle grounds you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the Camp de Tarragona and the Costa Daurada.

Church of Sant Bartomeu

In the centre of the village, the church of Sant Bartomeu is another of the outstanding heritage elements of L'Argentera. It is a construction of medieval origin that stands out for its simplicity and its stone façade. One of the most characteristic elements is its bell tower, which crowns the building. This church continues to be an important meeting point for the inhabitants, especially during local festivals.

L'Argentera iron mine

La Argentera has a remarkable mining past, as the area was one of the main iron mines in the region until the 20th century. The L'Argentera iron mine is a witness to this industrial past. Although it is no longer in operation, the remains of the mining activity can be seen, which allow us to understand the importance of mining in the history of the municipality. For centuries, iron extraction was a key economic activity for the inhabitants of the area, and even today there are structures that recall that period.

Miranda Viewpoint

For nature and photography lovers, the Mirador de la Miranda is one of the best places from which to contemplate the natural surroundings of the Pradell-L'Argentera mountain range. This viewpoint offers spectacular views of the mountains and the surrounding villages. It is especially recommended to visit it during sunrise or sunset, when the soft light highlights the reliefs and colours of the landscape.
