Moors and Christians Festival of Lleida 2024

18/05/2024 - 19/05/2024
Lleida

Lleida is the city where the oldest origins of the Moors and Christians festivities have been documented. This is documented in 1150, months after the Count of Barcelona and Prince of Aragon, Ramón Berenguer IV, brought the Christian flag into the Muslim Medina Larida.

The visits to the city by Alfonso the Magnanimous, in 1458, or by Isabel the Catholic, in 1481, also documented dance parties between Moors, Christians and Jews. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Moors and Christians Festival of Lleida lived its maximum splendor although, from 1899, the celebration turned into a dance of Moors and Christians with parliaments and music.

With the Moors and Christians Festival, the city has proudly recovered a lost tradition, whose antecedents date back to the 12th century.

The festive weekend begins, in Plaza Paeria, with the Embassies, the parliaments of the previous Moorish and Christian ambassadors to avoid the battle that will take place on Sunday, the big day of the festival.

On Sunday morning, the so-called children's entrance is celebrated and, at noon, the bands perform, playing music typical of the Lleida festival. In the afternoon, the Moors and Christians troupes gather in the Seu Vella to later parade in their colorful uniforms through the most central streets.

Before night falls, some satirical speeches begin, causing a verbal confrontation, which is followed by a spectacular battle, with the incomparable setting of La Seu Vella as a background.
