Sant Alís Summit in the Sierra del Montsec

Sant Alís Summit in the Sierra del Montsec
Sant Alís (1,675.4 m) is the highest peak in Montsec d'Ares (the section of Montsec between Mont-rebei and Terradets) and the second highest peak in the entire Montsec mountain range, just one meter below the Tozal de las Torretas.

In fact, the main characteristic of this pre-Pyrenean mountain range is its ridge profile almost always at the same height. On this route, we make an easy walk to this summit, starting from the car park next to the road that goes up to the Montsec Astronomical Observatory.

It is a very simple itinerary and suitable for all audiences. In fact, the summit of Sant Alís could be crowned by car since there is a forest track to the top. We opted, however, to make the last 2 km of forest trail on foot and thus be able to enjoy the sensational views of this pre-Pyrenean mountain range.

We leave from the car park next to the road that goes up to the Montsec Observatory and which connects Àger with Sant Esteve de la Sarga at the top of the mountain. At the starting point there is a wide panoramic viewpoint towards the Pyrenees and towards the Lleida plain.

r299_vistes From this viewpoint, we could only follow the track to the Peña de Sant Alís, but we chose to look for some trails so as not to make the climb so monotonous: initially, we continued along the ridge and along a small path to a first hill where there is a webcam and a weather station.

We go down a few meters and we will find the track again in the neck of the Paso de los Pozos de Hielo. From this point, we will continue mostly by track to the neck before the summit. We skirt through the shady area of Cabo del Ras and, further on, we come to a small neck. From this point, we take an old disused track that leaves us right at the top of Sant Alís. It is a wide hill from where we can enjoy a good panoramic view of the entire Montsec mountain range, apart from the Lleida plain and the Pyrenees. On clear days, we will distinguish places such as Montserrat, Pedraforca (from behind), Pica de Estats, Aneto and Monte Perdido. A real privilege.

From here we could start the return to the car again, but to extend the route a little, we follow the Montsec ridge until we reach some antennas at the next peak of the ridge. We can continue along the track or along the wide ridge where there is no well-trodden path but you can go everywhere. If we continue along the track, the only thing to keep in mind is to take an old path / track on the left after having passed the neck of the Paso del Oso, since if we continue along the track, it begins to descend and we will turn off. of the way.

r299_antena From the antennas (according to the ICGC it is in the place of the Tossal of the Canal del Embudo), we again enjoy a good panoramic view of the surroundings and a more eastern perspective of the Montsec d'Ares.

On the way back, we undo the path, either following the track or along the ridge to Sant Alís and, from there, we do not go back over the top but we directly follow the track that goes along the ridge on the north side doing something back. We continue along the track to the car. The views on both sides accompany us throughout the section and make the track somewhat less monotonous.
