Greater Festival of Santa Ana El Vendrell
Like all municipalities, the Vendrell also has its great local holiday, with Santa Anna as a representative image that identifies it.
The Fiesta Mayor of El Vendrell has managed to combine the most traditional elements with the modernity that the times demand. Thus, it retains an identity of its own with the recovery of popular dances and at the same time offers topical shows.
Those responsible for organizing the festival are the six administrators of Santa Ana, which are chosen annually through a Council of Entities, the Brotherhood of Administrators and applications submitted to the City Council.
On the other hand, each year four honorable carriers are named to recognize the residents of El Vendrell for their contributions to the culture of the municipality. These people of honor have a place of honor in the acts of popular and traditional culture of Santa Anna.
The Festival is celebrated over four days: from July 25 to 28. The festivity of Santiago (day 25) is the first day and corresponds to the eve of the big party. It begins with a spectacular opening and, at night, a magnificent castle of fires makes a prelude to the dance.
The 26th is the feast of Santa Ana, patron saint of the city, and it is the big day of the Fiesta Mayor. In the morning, the grallers come out announcing the start of the party; This procession is known as the early mornings and is done since time immemorial. At noon, all the popular culture groups parade through the streets and squares of the town. As they arrive at the Plaza Vieja, they act before Santa Anna and all the political authorities that are on the balcony of the town hall. Next, the castellera performance is done by the Niños del Vendrell. In the afternoon you can listen to the concert offered by the Choir-Orfeó Parroquial in the church and, when it begins to get dark, the smell of gunpowder, the rumble of rockets and the touch of drums fill the streets: it is the magnificent parade of fire. The parade ends with the cart of the Devil's Ball of El Vendrell in the Plaza Vella (only a couple of groups throughout Catalonia offer this performance, the origin of which is lost in the darkness of time). The final point is one lit from the bell tower.
The next day, July 27 and Santa Anita day, there are several shows that include popular parades, in which all the popular dances participate, as well as the castellers (Nens del Vendrell), the Imps and the Dance of Devils of the Vendrell, that in the afternoon they offer the spectacle of the sacramental car in the New square.
And finally, the party ends with day 28, the Day of the Dog; here, as highlights, the performance of the Baile de Malcasados ??in different streets and squares of the town and the presentation of the Santa Ana Administrators of the following year, which are the ones that light the fireworks, stand out.
