Towards year 1918 the growers of Gandesa grouped themselves to build a winery where to be able to vinify, this is how Cooperativa Agrícola de Gandesa was born. They had to ask for a loan in order to obtain financing for the construction of the winery, and they did so by mortgaging their lands and private properties. Reached this challenge, it was the bank of Valls who took over the financing and at the same time proposed the Modernist architect Cesar Martinell (Valls, Alt Camp, December 24, 1888 - Barcelona, ​​November 19, 1973).

Building

Modernist building in which finished the construction of the winery for the production of wines in January 1920, and its oil mill in November of the same year. These points have since made it a unique building in the town of Gandesa.

Its architectural value has made it one of the Cathedrals of wine. It was cataloged as a Cultural Asset of National Interest of the Generalitat of Catalonia, and one of the Seven Wonders of Catalonia, chosen in 2007.

Visits

You can visit the cooperative as designed by Cesar Martinell, with the press room, tubs, etc. At the end of the guided tour there is a wine tasting, and you can buy them to take to the winery's store.

Hours: Monday to Sunday, except Tuesdays that are done in the morning from 10 am to 12 noon, always with prior reservation.

  • Afternoon visits: Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
  • Family visits: includes an activity for children, for a price of four euros. The child designs a label and wears it in a bottle of wine (always with prior reservation and with a minimum number of children)
  • Express visits : free visits with wine tasting at a cost of four euros.

Elaboration

After almost a century making wines, Gandesa also produces Rancio and Mistela de las Garnachas wines - a very deep-rooted variety - in the Terra Alta DO, these mistelas are a limited production.

In addition to Garnachas Blanca and Negro (bernatxa as they say to Gandesa) other varieties such as Macabeo, Tempranillo, Sams, Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscat, Viogne, among others.

The combination of the different orographic, climatic factors, etc. make the "terroir" have some unique characteristics that together with the oenology we obtain wines appreciated by the consumer.

Nowadays Gandesa wines are distributed regionally, and also since a few years ago it has started to export. Markets where they are working to expand and consolidate.
